Cool Game Music

The conversation around classic video game music often centres around the usual suspects, for example the big names who were involved with the Japanese video game industry. But I like to be a little more [puts on shades]... eclectic.

Years ago a chance encounter with a demo of Shakii the Wolf got me interested in its composer, who I now know to be a member of D.A.C team, the providers of music for many DOS games out of South Korea.

In the interest of sharing my enthusiasm for these obscure but great tunes, here are links to the OSTs for a pair of those games that I ripped myself.

Illusion Blaze, a sidescrolling shmup:

Pee & Gity Special, a sidescrolling brawler:

(I may be one of the only legitimate YouTube accounts that has a dozen videos with "pee" in the title...)

There will be more forthcoming as time permits. Enjoy!

Hidden Palace Conclusion

Now that the Sonic 1&2 Soundtrack has been released and I've heard it, we can see if it resolves any of my questions about Hidden Palace's BGM. And guess what? Not only is the song not titled Hidden Palace on the soundtrack (it's called "Unused") but it actually has an ending unlike the original game. That goes a long way to confirming my theory that the song was not composed as a zone music. I'd say more, but I'm using a phone to post this. =)

Speaking of Hidden Palace...

I made a remix!

I wanted to make it sound like the opening to a wushu movie; it could use some more polish but meh.

Y'all win an internet cookie if you can ascertain where I lifted the drum sample from. =P

"They Call Me Sonic" Remix

Here's a "remix" (technically, it's more like a cover version) that I made awhile ago of the silly "They Call Me Sonic" rave song. I liked the chord progression and melody, and so I played around with it a little bit.

It's nothing too serious, but it was fun!

Shakii the Wolf Music

A long time ago, I found a demo of an MS-DOS game called Shakii the Wolf.

The game itself, while mildly charming, was pretty terrible - except for the music, which I loved. The songs from the game reminded me strongly of the classic 16-bit Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo games I grew up with.

Fortunately, even though it was a demo, the soundtrack contained (as far as I can tell) all of the game's music. At the time, I had none of this new-fangled computer internet gadgetry you kids are so fond of, and I ended up dubbing the music to audio cassette.

I haven't been able to find the music online anywhere, so I guess it's up to me to provide a source. Here's a YouTube playlist of the entire soundtrack, ripped directly from my dusty old mix tapes! Don't worry; the sound quality is still reasonable.

This one is probably my favourite track in the game.

Sadly, I have no idea who composed the soundtrack, as I don't have the full version of the game, and I can't find the info anywhere, either. If you know anything about it, please drop by in the comments and let me know.

P.S. Seriously, don't click this link. =P
